Tara Andrews, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven

Background in computer science (undergraduate) and Byzantine / medieval Armenian history (graduate). I worked on a critical edition of the Chronicle of Matthew of Edessa, a 12th century Armenian historical text, for my Ph.D., and developed a set of computer programs (including a collation tool) to help me do this.

I am now working on a project at the KU Leuven that is concerned with text stemmatology (that is, the copying history of a text, a "family tree" of manuscript texts). Although the application of biological algorithms to this is known to work to some degree, biology is not a perfect model for the manuscript copying process, so we are working on finding the limits of these algorithms by comparing their results to known external evidence about particular texts.
